Eurode medal of honor for Gerd Zimmermann
15.12.22
Interesting topics were again on the agenda: The friendship meadow at the EBC is being expanded together with the community foundation with installations for the protection of wild bees. A joint INTERREG project with the EGTC Euregio Meuse-Rhine to facilitate and support cross-border internships within the Euregio Meuse-Rhine was presented, as well as a suggestion from citizens with ideas to revive and complement the Eurodepark.
This was also the last meeting in which the mayor of Kerkrade, Dr. Dassen-Housen, chaired. She thanked for the good cooperation in the association meeting and handed over the chair for the next two years to her colleague in Herzogenrath, Dr. Benjamin Fadavian.
At the end of the session, the main act took place. The two mayors of Eurode asked the former mayor of Herzogenrath, Gerd Zimmermann, to come forward. From 1995 to 1999 he was municipal clerk in Herzogenrath and together with the then mayor of Kerkrade, Thijs Wöltgens, he laid the foundations for the establishment of the Eurode foundation. From 1999 to 2007 he was the first full-time mayor of the city of Herzogenrath and also mayor of Eurode. During this time he has been active and involved in many Eurode projects. The construction of the Eurode Business Center deserves special mention here. The EBC, which he opened in June 2001 together with his Dutch colleague Jos Som, was the first European service center to be built directly on the German/Dutch border. To this day, this service center is a successful model that has already been visited by many delegations from all over the world. Mrs. Dassen-Housen and Mr. Fadavian thanked their predecessor with the words: "Borders do not only separate, but can also connect", in the past you laid a solid foundation for the cross-border cooperation of our two cities in the special association Eurode . Your work will also be of great importance to future generations in bilateral and European cooperation."
Traditional Christmas tree decorations in the EBC
After a two-year break, the traditional Christmas tree decorations in the EBC could finally take place again on November 23. The large Christmas tree was in the front hall and was waiting for the primary students of the primary school KGS Straß (Herzogenrath) and the primary school St. Ursula (Kerkrade). The children had turned up in large numbers with their teachers and had rehearsed a Christmas program: From "In the Christmas Bakery" to "Feliz Navidad". Of course the jointly performed "Oh Tannenbaum" could not be missed. The children then decorated the Christmas tree with the jewelry they had brought with them and were actively encouraged by the mayor of Herzogenrath, Dr. Benjamin Fadavian and Alderman Jo Schlangen (Kerkrade). The Christmas tree became more and more colourful and the children ran laughing around the Christmas tree, which is right on the German/Dutch border.
Mr. Fadavian and Mr. Schlangen also gave the children a small Christmas present. The teachers also received a thank you from Mr. Hölsgens (Eurode Foundation).
