Stiftung Eurode 2000+
With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening of the European internal borders, the desire grew among both city councils and officials to intensify mutual relations and to remove the last wall in Europe, that of Rue Nieuwstraat/Neustraße. In 1991 the municipal authorities of Kerkrade and Herzogenrath signed a letter of intent to intensify cross-border cooperation in all areas where it seemed possible and useful, and this has remained the case to this day.
In early 1995, the reconstruction was completed and Neustraße/Nieuwstraat was handed over to the citizens of both cities with a big Eurode celebration in the presence of the foreign ministers of both countries. Neustraße/Nieuwstraat is now an open and border-free European street and Herzogenrath and Kerkrade together form the Public Entity Eurode.
This is how the "Eurode Foundation" was born, with the aim of improving the living conditions of the population of both border towns and alleviating the daily problems, especially of border commuters, through education, culture, sport, transport infrastructure, in short, through cross-border cooperation!
The "Eurode Foundation" consists of ten volunteers from Germany and the Netherlands. Some of them have been active since inception. Every month we try to organize and/or support an event together with associations. The events usually have a local or regional cross-border character.
We do not turn our backs on each other, we work together under the motto:
“Va Hatse tsezame” (With heart, together)
